I think I’m going to make it my year long goal to try a new restaurant in the North End, if I can, at least once a month. I know that they are all Italian, but they all offer variations on the cuisine. Just this past week I had the chance to try out Sfizi, which is a new tapas restaurant in the old location of Mare (same owners as well). Although it might seem like a saturated market, I still very much enjoy the tapas style dining and getting to try different plates without getting overly stuffed.
Just those offerings alone should get your mouth watering! 😛
To start, we ordered a bunch of the small plates to share. In addition to the tapas, there are pasta and full meal options. We ordered the meatballs, beet salad, stuffed calamari, zucchini blossoms and fresh Italian bread. I also had a prosecco cocktail to start and a malbec with dinner.
The appetizers were tasty although not entirely memorable. My favorite was definitely the beet salad with walnuts and goat cheese.
For an entree I ordered the osso bucco. It was fall of the bone although the flavor was a bit too vinegary for my taste. The mashed potatoes on the side though were fantastic.
It was the dessert that really stole the show though. I ordered the bread pudding and it was perfectly sweet and warm, with a vanilla ice cream accompaniment.
Overall, I would say it was a solid dinner, but nothing entirely memorable. The weather was pretty dismal outside and it was a small crowd inside. I can certainly see it becoming a popular spot in the summer, with the windows open out onto Richmond and North Street. The cocktails were potent and the small plates will be great for a group gathering. I would certainly go here again, after I’ve seen more of the North End of course. 😉
As with all concierge dinners, this one was complimentary. All opinions are my own.
Sfizi is located at 135 Richmond Street in the North End (on the Freedom Trail).
